ABOUT

26AD9399_edited.jpg

The Warrandyte Junior Football Club (WJFC) has been shaping young footballers since 1954, when our very first under-16 team took the field. Driven by the vision of pioneers like Lawrie Sloan and Jim Voce in the 1970s, the club expanded rapidly to introduce junior squads of all ages.

Over the decades, WJFC has celebrated historic premierships, championed safety reforms in junior sports leagues, and fostered a strong pathway to senior football.

COMMUNITY

As a proud signatory aligned with the AFL Women and Girls Community Football Charter, our junior club is fully committed to driving the engagement and participation of young females.

Guided by the AFL’s core pillars—Opportunity, Visibility, Access, and Investment—we ensure every young girl has a clear, well-supported pathway from junior footy upward.

WJFC actively breaks down barriers by providing dedicated girls' programs, equal access to resources, and female-friendly coaching, ensuring our environment is completely welcoming, safe, and inclusive.

The purpose is “to champion women and girls” through equitable club practices. At our club, young females are empowered to build confidence, lead on and off the field, and fall in love with the game.

Club Leadership and Special Recognition Awards

Ben McKellar Perpetual Shield: This annual shield honors former 1998 Colts Captain Ben McKellar, an outstanding young leader who tragically passed away from leukemia in 1999. It is awarded to the appointed Club Captain(s)—a player leadership role pioneered by WJFC to connect the committee and players—who fulfills the duty with exceptional pride, gusto, and community spirit.

Lee Tindale Medal: Established in memory of passionate club supporter Lee Tindale (d. 2006), this medal celebrates the concept of team before individual. Rather than crowning the "best on ground," it honors a player who displays immense courage, protects teammates in trouble, provides on-field inspiration, and maintains high standards of sportsmanship toward opponents.

Jacob Habel Trophy (Youth Courage Award) celebrates the enduring legacy of an adored young player who passed away in early 2025. Starting his football journey at WJFC in Auskick, Jacob grew into a highly respected, courageous community leader known for his magnetic personality and infectious smile. Despite fighting a long, brave battle with his health, his spirit never wavered. Voted by peers, this special trophy recognizes a young person who demonstrates outstanding courage, resilience, kindness, and integrity both on and off the field, keeping Jacob's inspiring memory alive within the club.
